Material Comparison: PP vs. PE in Wet Wipes Lids Manufacturing

Every time you take out a wet wipe, you often overlook an "invisible guardian"—the lid. This seemingly insignificant little component determines the lifespan of the wet wipes: the lid's seal affects the wipe's moisture level; the material's durability determines whether it will deform or malfunction after repeated opening and closing; and the smoothness of the feel subtly influences the user experience each time. Therefore, the quality of the wet wipe lid is a core element directly related to the product's usability.

The choice of material determines the functionality of the wet wipe lid. Currently, the wet wipe lid manufacturing industry mainly uses two polymer materials: PP (polypropylene) and PE (polyethylene). A comprehensive comparison of the application characteristics of these two materials in wet wipe lid manufacturing is essential for better application in wet wipe products.

What is Polypropylene?

Polypropylene (PP) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer made from propylene monomers.

Polypropylene is commonly used in the form of homopolymers, which contain only propylene monomers. Adding ethylene during polymerization produces polypropylene copolymers. These copolymers differ slightly from pure polypropylene in properties, for example, their melting points range from 266°F to 338°F.This makes polypropylene perform better at high temperatures.

What are the properties of polypropylene?

Polypropylene is popular because of its many excellent material properties. These properties include:

•Toughness—Polypropylene combines good flexibility and bending resistance while maintaining its functional properties under stress and fatigue conditions. High toughness is important because wet wipe lids are repeatedly folded during long-term use.

• High resistance—Resistant to water, certain chemicals, dilute acids and alkalis, and high-temperature melting or deformation.

Wet wipes may be subjected to high and low temperatures during transportation; good resistance ensures that the wet wipe lid will not melt or crack.

• Variable Transparency – The chemical composition of PP determines its transparency range, from opaque to transparent. Some manufacturers use transparent wet wipe covers for aesthetic purposes.

What is Polyethylene?

Polyethylene (PE) is also a semi-crystalline thermoplastic. Unlike PP, it is polymerized from ethylene monomers. The molecular structure of polyethylene (PE) varies depending on the manufacturing process, meaning it exhibits varying degrees of amorphous and crystalline properties. This density variation is unique to polyethylene, making it possible to manufacture polymers with diverse properties.

What are the Uses of Polyethylene?

Polyethylene of different densities has different molecular structures. However, all polyethylenes share some common properties and chemical characteristics, including:

• Good heat resistance, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance.

• It offers a wide range of transparency, from opaque to transparent.

• It has good flexibility, allowing it to bend without deforming. It is not easily broken when opening and closing, and even with forceful pulling or frequent bending of the lid edges and clips, cracks are unlikely to appear, preventing damage to the lid due to improper handling.

Comparison of PP and PE materials

PP material

PE material

Raw material costs:

Slightly higher (approximately 10%-15% higher than PE ratio)

Lower, with a clear price-performance advantage.

Processing costs

Low (High molding efficiency, low scrap rate)

High (Requires process adjustment, relatively high scrap rate)

Environmental protection

With good recyclability and mature recycling technology, recycled PP can be used to make products such as plastic pallets and trash cans, which aligns with the trend of the "circular economy".

While recyclable, it has a low recycling value and degrades more slowly than PP. Improper handling can easily create an environmental burden, which does not meet the current development requirements of "green packaging".

From the perspective of the core functional requirements of wet wipe lids and industry development trends, PP material is undoubtedly a more suitable and superior choice. Whether it's the long-lasting seal that solves the problem of wet wipes drying out after opening, the durability to withstand repeated opening and closing and temperature fluctuations, or the processing adaptability to meet the needs of refined design and large-scale production, PP material demonstrates comprehensive advantages far exceeding PE. Even though the raw material cost is slightly higher, the lower processing scrap rate and more stable finished product quality effectively balance the overall cost; and mature recycling technology further aligns it with the current development direction of "green packaging," earning brands an environmental reputation.
