Key Features of Wet Wipes Packing Bags: Moisture Retention, Durability, Safety

The quality of wet wipes packaging bags directly determines the user experience. Only by doing well in the three key characteristics of “moisture retention, durability and safety” can the core demands of “easy to use, durable and safe to use” be supported. 

Moisture retention is the foundation for maintaining the efficacy of wet wipes. Wet wipes rely on moisture and active ingredients to perform their cleaning and moisturizing functions. If the moisture retention is insufficient, the wet wipes will dry out and become ineffective, and even the increased concentration of ingredients may irritate the skin. The main function of wet wipe packaging is to form an airtight seal to prevent pre-moistened wet wipes from drying out. This is achieved through the following methods:

High-barrier materials: The packaging bags are usually made of these plastics: polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyester (PET). These materials are widely used in the wet wipe packaging industry because they have a low moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR), which enhances moisture-proof performance.

Re-sealable closures: Common sealing methods include adhesive seals (This is what we call the sticker on the wet wipes packaging.) and hard plastic flip-top lids. Flip-top lids provide a more secure and reliable seal and are easier to use with one hand. Adhesive seals are lightweight but lose their stickiness after repeated use, thus compromising the seal. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Even distribution of added moisture: Some packaging and dispensing methods are designed to ensure that the liquid solution is evenly distributed across all the stacked wet wipes, preventing the bottom wipes from being overly saturated and the top wipes from drying out.

Improving durability can avoid the pain point of “wet wipes breaking before they are used up”. Poor durability can lead to wet wipes getting damp and contaminated. If the remaining wet wipes need to be transferred, it will increase the risk of secondary contamination. Therefore, the packaging must be able to withstand the operations during supply chain transportation and consumer use without tearing, leaking or breaking. The main features include:

Puncture resistance: The multi-layer film has physical strength and the ability to resist external force damage, which is particularly important for travel-sized or large-capacity refill packs.

Strong seal: The heat sealing process during manufacturing forms a strong leak-proof peripheral seal for the packaging bag, and the use of heat-sealable materials ensures that the sealing process is error-free.

Sturdy lid: The connection point (“hinge”) of the plastic lid must be strong enough to withstand repeated folding and use.

 

Safety is the bottom line for health. Packaging serves as a protective barrier to ensure the safety of wet wipes during use. Key safety features include:

Anti-contamination: The sealed design can prevent dust, dirt and microorganisms in the air from entering, thus avoiding contamination before and during use. This is particularly important for medical wet wipes and personal hygiene products.

Material compatibility: The choice of packaging materials should ensure that they do not react with the wet wipe solution. For example, wet wipes containing strong disinfectants require specific chemical-resistant plastic packaging.

Sterility during the manufacturing process: Wet wipes are packaged in an automated process to ensure that the entire process from bagging to sealing is carried out in a clean environment, avoiding microbial contamination. In addition, packaging equipment needs to be regularly subjected to high-temperature sterilization to maintain a sterile production process.

The three aspects are not independent but interdependent. Poor durability can lead to bag damage, directly compromising the moisture retention and exposing the wet wipes to safety risks. Insufficient moisture retention means that even the most durable and safe packaging cannot save the value of the wet wipes. If the safety standards are not met, even the best moisture retention and durability are meaningless. Only by taking all three into account can the packaging bag ensure that the wet wipes remain moist, the bag remains intact, and the use is safe throughout the 1-3 year shelf life, truly meeting the needs of users.
